StartingBloc's First Global BLOC OUT
Saturday, November 15, 2008 // 12:00-1:30pm // http://chat.startingbloc.org/
BLOC OUT
The idea is simple and brilliant, and arose from an alumni marketing brainstorming session:
- Bring you, our 850 alumni, together from around the globe by asking you to be online at the same time.
-
Each alumnus sends a minimum of 10 personalized emails to people in
your personal or professional network whom you think would benefit from
attending the Institute for Social Innovation while adding value to the
StartingBloc Network.
- Follow-up these emails with a personal
phone call to let each of the 10 candidates you have selected know
about both the email and StartingBloc.
- Unite Alumni and demonstrate the power of the StartingBloc Alumni Network
- Globally enhance the StartingBloc brand
- In addition to servers worldwide, we're definitely looking to crash some cell phone towers.
Regional BLOC OUT Meet-ups
In
an effort to takeover trendy cafes around the world, Alumni are
encouraged to physically meet in different regions (if possible) for
the BLOC OUT. I will be joining the DC alumni in our nation's capital,
while Jo will hold down the fort with alumni in our New York office.
Our basic email template is below; however, the most powerful
anecdote to share is your personal experience and why you believe it is
important that the people you are contacting apply to the Institute for
Social Innovation. One issue you might proactively address is
the cost of the Institute and how the value you gained from your
experience was well worth it! Also, be sure to note that financial aid
is available for those with expressed need.

Email Blub (feel free to edit/personalize):
Hi [ ],
Remember
when I first told you about StartingBloc and the amazing program I
participated in during the [spring/fall/summer of 2005/2006/2007/2008]?
Maybe not, but please let me take five minutes of your time now and
explain why I believe you are a worthy candidate for StartingBloc's
Institute for Social Innovation, and the lifelong benefits StartingBloc
has to offer.
As you well know, given the current financial
crisis, more than ever we are asking ourselves: "How can I find a
career that generates significant social impact, while providing
monetary value to all stakeholders - including myself?" More simply:
"How can I do what I love, secure a decent salary and make the world a
better place."
Enter StartingBloc.
StartingBloc
is a global organizational that educates, empowers and connects
emerging leaders to drive positive social change across sectors. Since
2005, StartingBloc has graduated 850 Fellows from over seventy
universities and forty countries. StartingBloc seeks emerging leaders
who are driven to "Spark Social Change." This is what happens during
StartingBloc's signature program, the Institute for Social Innovation.
The
Institutes bring together 120 students and young professionals whose
goal is to live well and do good. These emerging leaders, called
StartingBloc Fellows, come from a variety of sectors and academic
majors - from finance to fashion, aeronautics to architecture, and
biology to religious studies. As a Fellow, StartingBloc gave me the
necessary training, education and networks to turn any career I choose
into a socially responsible one. I learned from industry leading
professionals, StartingBloc alumni, and my peers about how to drive
sustainable, positive social change across sectors. And then we party
or relax at night together. In a socially responsible way, of course.
As
a StartingBloc Fellow, you will be exposed to equally entrepreneurial,
passionate, creative, fun, driven and talented students, innovative
ideas, employment opportunities, and top tiered business and graduate
school programs. These include our partnerships with MIT Sloan School
of Management, The Fletcher School at Tufts University, NYU Wagner,
Columbia Business School, London Business School, Heinz School of
Public Policy and the Yale School of Management. Our partnerships with
New Leaders for New School, Glodman Sachs, CSRWire, Gasoline Alley
Foundation, and Teach for America, among others, provide Fellows with
job, internship, and networking opportunities.
The thing I
love most about StartingBloc is [ ], which is why I have taken time out
of my day to recruit you for something I believe so deeply in.
Now
I know what you're thinking. "This sounds amazing, but how much is this
going to cost me?" Yes, there is an initial fee to participate in the
Institute ($350 for students, $450 for young professionals). Think of
it has a personal investment with returns that keep on giving. I have
come to find that the value I gained from participating in the
Institute definitely exceeded the cost of the program.
Finally,
you might be wondering what happens post-Institute. StartingBloc
Fellows become StartingBloc Alumni (the words are used
interchangeably), and have the ability to connect with others at the
local level through regional alumni boards and programming, attend
StartingBloc's continuing education programs, and reap the benefits of
the aformentioned partnerships.
Applications are open now
until December 1st for StartingBloc's 2009 Greater Boston Institute
(four days: Feb 13-16, 2009) and Greater New York Institute (two
weekends: Feb 28-Mar 1 and Mar 28-29, 2009). I'm sure you already know
this, though, because you have left this email to visit the website.
Because you're hooked.
If you have any further questions, please
feel free to contact me anytime, because I can talk about my
StartingBloc experience for hours.
Cheers,
[ ]
